PE at Belmont
Intent
At Belmont, we strive to provide a Physical Education curriculum that encourages the development of the individual in a variety of physical and sporting activities which challenge and stimulate their physical and mental well-being. From Early Years to Year 6, children at Belmont follow a clear and defined progression of skills in each physical activity which is supported by a focus on the values of fairness, resilience, respect and honesty. Central to this, we seek to provide a wide range of opportunities for our pupils to compete in competitive and non-competitive sporting situations in after school clubs and inter or outer-school competitions.
Implementation
- Use of Complete PE which is an interactive scheme of learning and resource which provides the fundamentals of a high-quality Physical Education curriculum, which is in line with the National Curriculum
- Each class receives two sessions of Physical Education a week. One with the class teacher and one with a specialist sports coach. This is supplemented by two specialist coach sessions in year 6 and specialist swimming coaches in year 5.
- Pupils are given the opportunity to practise skills in a variety of ways and each lesson builds upon the previous skills, allowing them time to embed it. This is enabled due to a clear progression of skills map for each area/sport within the curriculum.
- Staff wear appropriate clothing to teach Physical Education to ensure accurate modelling of skills.
- In Year 5, children receive swimming lessons with the ambition that they can swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres.
- A wide range of extra-curricular clubs are offered, such as Football, Multi Sport, Gymnastics and Ballet
- All children are provided with opportunities to further develop their own skills, and interests. This is achieved mainly via our relationship with School Games Mark which affords pupils opportunities to participate in festivals and competitions.
- Children are provided with a wider range of sporting activities through residentials in year 4 and year 6; an outdoor adventurous activity day in year 5; and ‘Health & Fitness’ Week, which provides students with an opportunity to experience more varied activities.
Impact
The intended impact of the Physical Education curriculum is that:
- All children at Belmont are encouraged to develop and master fundamental skills and apply them to a variety of sports and activities.
- Pupils are kept active to develop and promote a healthy lifestyle, which will inspire and prepare them for life after Belmont.
- The benefits to mental health are at the forefront of Belmont’s physical education curriculum, with PSHE closely linked.
- The great majority of our children leave school with the skills to self-rescue in the water and swim 25 metres competently.
- Pupils are motivated to create their own identity within sport, influenced by our diverse curriculum and array of extra-curricular clubs.
- Our school's values of resilience, respect, kindness, responsibility and honesty are thoroughly embedded in Physical Education lessons so that students grow to be positive role models, demonstrating good sporting behaviour and are more prepared for becoming active citizens.
