ADT at Belmont

Intent

At Belmont, a variety of artists, designers and architects are celebrated and studied. We hope to inspire their ambitions, providing them with an awareness of different careers in this field, such as illustrators, fashion designers, architects or printmakers. Our Art, Design & Technology curriculum is designed to engage, inspire and challenge pupils, whilst providing them with a deepening cultural awareness that they may not have experienced. As pupils progress, they should gain a deeper understanding of how Art, Design & Technology contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our world. This is enabled through our carefully selected, wide range of unique and diverse artists, craft makers and designers for children to study.

Implementation

  • Learn about a diverse range of artists, designers and architects (inspired by the naming of each class).
  • Learn the essential skills such as observations, sketching, sculpting and colour mixing.
  • The curriculum is layered in a progressive way, skills are revisited and built upon.
  • Children are taught to follow the design process from start to finish by researching, analysing, planning, designing, practising, making, completing and evaluating.
  • Additional opportunities are offered to children who display an innate ability or natural curiosity towards the subject, such as through competitions and exhibits (both within and beyond school).
  • Creative opportunities are harnessed in other curriculum areas and showcased within the school.
  • As Silver Artmark holders, we strive to promote creative opportunities across all curriculum areas for all learners wherever possible.

Impact

The intended impact of the Art, Design & Technology curriculum is that pupils will:

  • Have a deeper understanding of the various individuals that have worked within this field.
  • Create a range of outcomes using different media in both 2D and 3D work.
  • Children will make connections between culture and history and what inspired the artist at the time.
  • Learning journeys will be showcased in portfolios showing the progression of skills.
  • Gain a deeper understanding of artistic process and aesthetic values.
  • Develop deeper skills of creativity, design and evaluation, to utilise in other areas of the curriculum.
